In 2004, Dan Buettner teamed up with National Geographic, the national Institute on Aging, and the world's best longevity researchers to identify pockets around the world where people lived measurably better and longer. They found that people reached age 100 at rates 10 times greater than the U.S. average, with lower rates of chronic disease. These original Blue Zone areas are located in vastly different parts of the world, from Sardinia, Italy, to Okinawa, Japan, to Costa Rica's Nicoya Peninsula. Studying the factors that influenced health and longevity in these places, researchers found that residents share nine specific traits.
These nine traits can be grouped in four categories. These principles are the basis for how Blue Zones Project impacts communities to make healthy choices easier:
What is the Blue Zones Project?
These categories are designed to motivate us in the right direction when it comes to adding value to our lives and families. These everyday choices will benefit Minds, Bodies, Souls and Spirits.
